Today, we examine another of the more affordable Bronze-rated ATX 3.1 power supplies available with a native 12V-2×6 connector — the MONTECH BETA2 ATX 3.1 850W.

Today, we examine one of the more affordable Bronze-rated ATX 3.1 power supplies available with a native 12V-2×6 connector — the MONTECH BETA 2 ATX 3.1 850W. Positioned as a cost-conscious option for modern gaming systems, it offers native support for the latest NVIDIA RTX graphics cards while keeping to a non-modular design and a focused feature set. Despite its budget-oriented positioning, MONTECH includes several practical touches that appeal to builders who value both reliability and clean presentation.



Beyond ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1 compliance, the MONTECH BETA 2 features DC-to-DC conversion, a 105°C Japanese primary capacitor, and a Hydro-Dynamic Bearing cooling fan. Aesthetically, it carries MONTECH’s familiar design, highlighted by the brand’s signature triangular ventilation pattern and embossed flat cables that resemble premium sleeved wiring. Packaging, Bundle, and Cables





The MONTECH BETA 2 850W PSU arrived sealed in plastic, good protection against natural elements. To box itself is pretty aesthetic for bronze-rated PSU – fully printed packaging unlike those of the SAMA and ENERMAX units we’ve reviewed that had very minimal printing. Nevertheless, it sure looks fancy looking at the packaging alone.



The PSU is protected by bubble wrap. The PSU comes with a power cord, our sample included an EU plug, a bag of screws, cable ties, and a user guide.

Cables


Having a non-modular cable design, the BETA 2 can be challenging to manage but it does look aesthetic with its embossed cable design.


The 12V-2×6 connector on the BETA 2 850W is rated for 450W, same with the SAMA B850 PSU.

Similar to the SAMA B850, the BETA 2 850W utilises a single EPS cable in a pigtail configuration, providing dual 8-pin (4+4) connectors from one cable. This allows compatibility with motherboards requiring two 8-pin CPU power inputs, though both connectors share the same cable run.

For graphics support, the BETA 2 850W includes two PCIe cables, each configured in a dual 6+2-pin pigtail layout. This effectively provides up to four 8-pin PCIe connectors, offering broader compatibility with high-power graphics cards alongside the native 12V-2×6 connector.

Closer Look


External


The BETA 2 carries MONTECH’s distinctive triangular ventilation pattern, a design element also seen on the MONTECH CENTURY II 850W PSU. This geometric grille spans the top panel, giving the unit a recognisable identity while promoting airflow. The same angular motif extends to the side panel, maintaining a cohesive and consistent aesthetic across the PSU’s enclosure.


The specification label is positioned on the top surface, clearly outlining the voltage rails, output ratings, regulatory certifications, and serial number. Placement here ensures visibility when installed in most modern cases with bottom-mounted PSU layouts.


At the rear, the triangular cut-out pattern continues around the exhaust area. The rear remains conventional, with a standard IEC power input and power switch.

Internal


The MONTECH BETA 2 850W is equipped with a BaoDiKai (BDK) BDH12025S model 120mm 12V cooling fan rated at 0.3A, capable of reaching up to 2000 RPM. It delivers up to 91.25 CFM of airflow with a maximum noise level of 37.3 dBA, using a sleeve and ball bearing configuration for balanced cooling performance.


Despite on the more affordable side, the BETA 2 is equipped with aluminium heatsinks to help with heat dissipation.


The MONTECH BETA 2 850W utilises a Japanese primary capacitor — specifically a Toshin Kogyo LW Series 105°C 420V 680µF aluminium electrolytic unit. While Toshin Kogyo is not as widely recognised among enthusiasts as premium-tier names such as Rubycon, Nippon Chemi-Con, or Nichicon, the brand maintains a solid reputation within the industry for producing reliable, high-temperature components suitable for power supply applications.

For a value-oriented Bronze PSU, the inclusion of a Toshin Kogyo primary capacitor is a solid choice. Its 105°C rating ensures improved durability under sustained thermal load, and while it may not have the same recognition as top-tier Japanese brands, it remains a dependable component that suits the BETA 2’s price positioning well.

Testing Methodologies & Results


We will be using an ElmorLabs PMD2 that monitors and measures voltage, current, and power flowing through the CPU, GPU and motherboard power cables.



Our testing methodology will now be using OCBase’s OCCT Enterprise Edition software for power loading and monitoring. Tweaking the OCCT Stability Test, we can set different power loads for the PSU easier rather than playing around with various software to achieve set power loads. All testing is conducted using the 230V residential power standard.



Methodology
The ElmorLabs PMD2 features several monitoring points which includes two 8-pin EPS connectors (EPS1 and EPS2), three +12V 8-pin PCIE (PCIE1, PCIE2, and PCI3), one 12V-2×6 connector (HPWR) and readings on the 24-pin which include +12V, +5, and +3.3. For the +12V output on the peripheral/molex cable, we will be using a multimeter.

Power load will be at 10% increments using the OCCT Stability Test running for 5 minutes – as much as our current testing setup allows which is currently 750W~800W with the following testing configuration below:

Voltage Regulation



In our test configuration, the RTX 3070 is powered via the 12V-2×6 (HPWR) cable, the RTX 4060Ti is powered by the PCIE3 cable, the PCIE1 and PCIE2 are unpopulated but is remained plugged in to the PMD2 device and will continue reading voltages. The EPS1 and EPS2 connectors are shared in a single EPS cable with pigtail connectors, a similar cable setup with the SAMA B850 power supply unit.

With our test configuration, system load peaked at 791W based on the PMD2 readings – whereas the SAMA B850 peaked at 800W with the same test and configuration. The MONTECH BETA 2 has slightly looser voltage regulation compared to the SAMA unit.



OCCT Stability Test
Overall +12V regulation remains well within ATX tolerance across all load levels. The PCIe and native 12V-2×6 connectors show tight control, generally staying within roughly ±1.1% at maximum load, with minimal fluctuation under transient conditions. This indicates stable GPU power delivery and consistent regulation on the primary +12V rail. Graphs below are readings during the 70% workload test and maximum possible workload test with our given configuration which came around ~93% load.



The EPS1 and EPS2 connectors show slightly greater droop under higher loads, peaking at just over -1.5%. This is expected since both connectors share a single pigtail cable, resulting in more noticeable voltage sag compared to the independently routed PCIe lines. As reflected in the graphs, the PCIe rails remain flatter while the EPS rails show deeper dips, though all readings remain well within ATX specifications.



The +3.3V rail consistently operates slightly above its nominal value and shows comparatively looser regulation across the load range. In contrast, the +5V rail remains tightly controlled, maintaining deviation within 1% throughout testing. Comparing the BETA 2 with the recently reviewed SAMA B850, the MONTECH BETA 2 850W boasts better quality 105°C Japanese-brand capacitors while the SAMA B850, with an all-Taiwanese capacitor construction, appear to be superior in terms of voltage regulation.

Acoustics
The MONTECH BETA 2 850W’s cooling fan spins at all times. At low loads, our sound meter picks up noise levels around 47~48 dBA near the cooling fan vent. (average room noise level with PSU off is ~45 dBA).



During maximum load testing, where total system draw reached approximately 791W, we recorded noise levels of around 62 dBA at the front of the open-frame test system near the GPUs and CPU cooler (see image from top of the page). Readings taken at the rear of the PSU, close to the power switch, were similar. As we are unable to fully isolate individual component noise, measurements were taken at key points around the system — near the GPUs, CPU cooler, and PSU.

Based on our observations, the PSU is not the dominant noise source under load. The loudest contributor remains to be the two triple-fan graphics cards (RTX 3070 and RTX 4060Ti) operating at maximum fan speeds. No coil whine was detected from the BETA 2 850W throughout testing.

Conclusion


The MONTECH BETA 2 850W ATX 3.1 power supply unit appeals to modern PC builders on a tight budget particularly with the ongoing DRAM and SSD price hike that’s pushing value in new PC builds further away.

Performance
Voltage regulation remains within specification across all rails, with tighter control observed on the PCIe outputs and expected droop on the shared EPS pigtail cable — behaviour that is consistent with its cable configuration rather than a sign of instability. The inclusion of a 105°C Japanese primary capacitor further reinforces its reliability credentials for a Bronze-class unit.

Value
Priced at an MSRP of US$69.90, the MONTECH BETA 2 850W sits on the more affordable end of the ATX 3.1 PSUs with native 12V-2×6 connectors. At this price point, it undercuts many competitors within the same efficiency tier while also providing a longer 5-year warranty. Beyond its electrical performance, the BETA 2 also distinguishes itself aesthetically, with embossed flat cables and MONTECH’s signature triangular vent design giving it a more refined look than typical budget-oriented power supplies.



Backed by a 105°C Japanese primary capacitor, embossed cables, MONTECH’s signature triangular styling, and a 5-year warranty, the MONTECH BETA 2 850W offers a well-balanced mix of reliability, modern GPU compatibility, and value without moving into higher-priced Gold-rated power supply unit options.
