Earlier this week memory experts Crucial announced the release of two new SSDs scheduled for this quarter, but we’d be remiss in not mentioning the expanded memory lineup also announced at CES 2015 this week. The new models, each of which are constituents of a revised DDR4 memory range, cater to a gamut of high-performance desktops and now also upcoming DDR4 laptops.
Ballistix Sport LT & Ballistix Tactical DDR4
First up comes new Ballistix Sport LT and Ballistix Tactical DDR4 DIMMs. Ballistix Sport LT DDR4 memory is ideal for mainstream users requiring relatively modest speeds of up to 2400MT/s, whilst the Ballistix Tactical Range accounts for those who need a little more bandwidth through a 2666MT/s SKU.
The two ranges also differ on the aesthetic front. Ballistix Sport LT DIMMs include a black PCB and integrated heatspreader with digital camo design, offering a different twist on heatspreader aesthetics perhaps more suited to various camo-effect motherboards. By contrast, Ballistix Tactical DIMMs feature a steel grey heatspreader with black PCB.
Both the Ballistix Sport LT and Tactical DDR4 naturally support plug and play operation with Intel XMP 2.0 profiles.
DDR4 SODIMMs
DDR4 is an important technology for the next laptop generation set to be released later this year. An operating voltage of 1.2V (compared with the typical 1.5 for standard DDR3) as well as other efficiencies in DDR4 memory architecture reduces the power overhead by up to 40%, not insignificantly improving battery life. Furthermore at 2133MT/s Crucial DDR4 SODIMMs are up to 30% faster than equivalent DDR3 designs, improving performance and productivity.
