The gaming work is collectively holding its breath for the first DirectX 12 triple-A title, and for some time it’s been believed that the honour would be claimed by Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Now it appears all-but confirmed as AMD‘s Chief Gaming Scientist, Richard Huddy, explained to Tweaktown this week.
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is being developed with the help of AMD engineers and technology, and so the Red Team are in prime position to discuss some of the features and capabilities of the next-gen title. Most importantly for enthusiast gamers DirectX 12 be a central from day one, rather than patched in later.
The extent of DirectX 12 support within Mankind Divided isn’t clear however. Both NVIDIA and AMD have come in for criticism recently following the release of unofficial DirectX12 benchmarks as the extent of their support for all DirectX 12 feature levels remains unclear. At this stage it’s wise to take all benchmarks and marketing rhetoric from both camps with a pinch of salt, and wait for the games themselves to be released.
Regarding benchmarks, Huddy also confirmed that Mankind Divided will have its own canned benchmark routine. This welcome inclusion joins a trend of recent PC games published by Square Enix which have all included their own benchmarks, ensuring that they’re seen on GPU reviews the world over.
Also of note is that Mankind Divided will also feature the third iteration of TressFX, AMD’s hair simulation toolset. TressFX debuted with the 2013 launch of Tomb Raider and has since been developed alongside other AMD-specific tools, and competes with NVIDIA’s HairWorks package. In the past TressFX has been an open standard, allowing all graphics vendors to tailor their drivers to the techniques used.
DirectX 12 support is a major selling-point for Mankind Divided, but it’s also likely to still support the widely-used DX11 and hence ensure compatibility with older hardware. Barring a surprise release from another publisher the game will be the first DX12 title on the market when it’s released in late February 2016
