Packaging & First Look

Box Front

The front of the box looks fairly minimal, with a graphic design that features various ASRock exclusive features, along the bottom there are various compulsory mentions such as FM2/2+ socket, A88X chipset, DTS and Home Cloud.

Rear side of box

At the back we find a neatly laid out list of features that is easy to read, alongside an image of the product and some listed specifications.

Included accessories

Included with the motherboard we find 4 SATA cables, an I/O shield, a multilingual installation guide, a software setup guide, A leaflet about the home cloud feature, and of course the driver disc.

Overview of the A88X Extreme6+

Under the hard photography light we see that the motherboard is ‘brown’, however, to the eye and in natural lighting it is much darker and much more attractive, it would have been nicer if it was black, but at least it isn’t green! Overall the board looks well laid out with plenty of expansion options and some hefty phase power circuitry.

Closer Look

APU socket area

On the left you can find a dual 4pin PWM fan headers followed by the 8+2 power phases that accompany the FM2+ socket. On the right there is an 8 pin CPU power socket.

The A88X Extreme6+ can take up to 64GB memory

At the top of the motherboard, just above the APU socket, there are 2x 3pin and 1x 4pin fan headers. This motherboard features four memory slots, two of which is capable of supporting up to DDR3 2600MHz. Alongside the memory slots we find the 24pin ATX power socket and a USB 3.0 front panel header.

Bottom right section of the board

In this section, we find a welcome bank of 6 right angled SATA ports, the dual BIOS chips, an additional SATA port (it appears the A88X chipset can give a total of 8 SATA connections), a power and reset buttons, a BIOS selector switch, another 4pin PWM fan header and a debug LED indicator. The low profile chipset cooling looks simple but should be effective.

The internal I/O lined up along the bottom

From left to right there is the front panel audio, which will give access to the headphone amp supporting up to 600ohm impedance headphones via the front panel jacks, COM headers, IR sensor header, 3x 2 USB 2.0 headers and the front panel control headers.

The expansion slots are arranged intelligently, giving a clear two slot space between the first and second PCIe x16 slots, ASRock have also included 2x PCIe x1 and 2x PCI legacy, as well as a final PCIe x 4 to finish things off (physical x16).

Purity Sound

Underneath the Purity sound EMI shield, is located the Realtek ALC 1150, one of the best audio codecs available, with the TI NE5532 headphone amp/ differential amp either side. Towards the top we find the Qualcomm Atheros AR8171 that supports remote power on via the internet, this is what allows the ASRock Home Cloud feature that enables remote access to your desktop via various devices, anytime, anywhere.

Rear I/O

From left to right, Universal PS2, 2xUSB 2.0. D-SUB, DVI, DP, HDMI, HDMI-IN, eSATA, 4x USB 3.0, gigabit lan, 1 x Optical SPDIF Out Port and HD audio jacks. The inclusion of an HDMI-IN is quite interesting and many could find useful, also using an FM2+ APU, the A88X Extreme6+ supports the use of up to four monitors.

BIOS & Software

The BIOS is attractive and well laid out, though felt laggy and unintuitive using the mouse, it was fine using the keyboard though. The main thing I found frustrating, was there was no ‘current’ and ‘projected’ clock speed present that makes note of any changes you make while tweaking overclocking.

The ASRock A-Tuning utility when installed alongside the relevant software, is a (nearly) all encompassing UI for all of the ASRock exclusive technologies. It would have been good to see the ASRock Home Cloud and the Sun Login tool for remote access integrated with this to help make the setup process more streamlined.

Generally, it looks clean and well laid out and offers something akin to what we see with ASUS motherboards, simplified performance, standard and power saving modes, access to ASRock exclusive technologies and software, an OC tweaker and live updates. Something I am very pleased to see, within the system information tab, you can find that the APU temperatures are read accurately and are clearly labelled along with the motherboard temperatures, while there are applications that do this for many AMD boards, they are often labelled vaguely like TMPin00 leaving the temperature labelled ‘CPU’ reading somewhere between -232 to 90 degrees C.

It is always fun to play with an OC tool within the operating system, yet some BIOS work will still be required to really allow any ‘on the fly’ changes, any ‘applied’ changes otherwise, will just cause a restart with no changes made, this is why it would be called an ‘OC Tweaker’, to tweak your already applied overclocks within the OS, handy to try and squeeze that little extra out of your benching sessions.

Power Consumption

It’s interesting to note the power consumption across all motherboards because energy results can fluctuate between manufacturers due to the features and specifications that are integrated. First of all, for the idle tests the system is cold booted into Windows and no additional applications are executed – the watts are noted on the external energy monitor we use. Then the system is loaded with LinX 0.6.4 and MSI Kombustor simultainiously – watts are again monitored throughout the period of testing and the highest rated watts are then noted down. Below are the results of this energy test.

The idle power usage of the ASRock motherboard is significantly higher than the ASUS and GIGABYTE motherboards, however, it was able to keep control under extreme load.

Synthetic Benchmarks: AIDA64

CPU Queen Benchmark
This simple integer benchmark focuses on the branch prediction capabilities and the misprediction penalties of the CPU. It finds the solutions for the classic “Queens problem” on a 10 by 10 sized chessboard. At the same clock speed theoretically the processor with the shorter pipeline and smaller misprediction penalties will attain higher benchmark scores. For example — with HyperThreading disabled — the Intel Northwood core processors get higher scores than the Intel Prescott core based ones due to the 20-step vs 31-step long pipeline. CPU Queen test uses integer MMX, SSE2 and SSSE3 optimizations.

CPU Photoworxx Benchmark
This benchmark stresses the integer arithmetic and multiplication execution units of the CPU and also the memory subsystem. Due to the fact that this test performs high memory read/write traffic, it cannot effectively scale in situations where more than 2 processing threads used. For example, on a 8-way Pentium III Xeon system the 8 processing threads will be “fighting” over the memory, creating a serious bottleneck that would lead to as low scores as a 2-way or 4-way similar processor based system could achieve. CPU PhotoWorxx test uses only the basic x86 instructions, and it is HyperThreading, multi-processor (SMP) and multi-core (CMP) aware.

FPU Mandel Benchmark
This benchmark measures the double precision (also known as 64-bit) floating-point performance through the computation of several frames of the popular “Mandelbrot” fractal. The code behind this benchmark method is written in Assembly, and it is extremely optimized for every popular AMD, Intel and VIA processor core variants by utilizing the appropriate x87, SSE2, AVX or FMA4 instruction set extension. FPU Mandel test is HyperThreading, multi-processor (SMP) and multi-core (CMP) aware.

Synthetic Benchmarks: x264 HD

Simply put, this test measures how fast your machine can encode a short, DVD quality MPEG-2 video clip into a high-quality x264 video clip. What’s x264, you ask? It’s more or less the next-generation Xvid/DivX codec. I think it’s ideal for a benchmark because the application (x264.exe) reports fairly accurate compression results (in frames per second) for each pass of the video encoding process, and it uses multi-core processors very efficiently.

Synthetic Benchmarks: Cinebench 11.5

CPU Rendering
CINEBENCH can measure systems with up to 64 processor threads. This test scene contains approximately 2,000 objects which in turn contain more than 300,000 polygons in total, and uses sharp and blurred reflections, area lights, shadows, procedural shaders, antialiasing, and much more. The result is displayed in points (pts). The higher the number, the faster your processor.

Open GL Graphics Rendering
This procedure uses a complex 3D scene depicting a car chase (by renderbaron) which measures the performance of your graphics card in OpenGL mode. The performance depends on various factors, such as the GPU processor on your hardware, but also on the drivers used. The graphics card has to display a huge amount of geometry (nearly 1 million polygons) and textures, as well as a variety of effects, such as environments, bump maps, transparency, lighting and more to evaluate the performance across different disciplines and give a good average overview of the capabilities of your graphics hardware.

Synthetic Benchmarks: SiSoftware SANDRA

SANDRA isn’t always a benchmark that is included in hardware reviews but We believe it shouldn’t be ignored. SANDRA provides a vigorous package that tests your system in a rather large array of benchmarks. There are many aspects of benchmark that can be executed. We will be considering – CPU, memory and GPGPU tests.

Synthetic Benchmarks: 3DMark 11 & 3DMark – Fire Strike

3DMark 11
Designed to measure your PC’s gaming performance 3DMark 11 makes extensive use of all the new features in DirectX 11 including tessellation, compute shaders and multi-threading. Trusted by gamers worldwide to give accurate and unbiased results, 3DMark 11 is the best way to consistently and reliably test DirectX 11 under game-like loads.

3DMark – Fire Strike
Fire Strike is our new showcase DirectX 11 benchmark designed for high-performance gaming PCs. It is our most ambitious and technical benchmark ever, featuring real-time graphics rendered with detail and complexity far beyond what is found in other benchmarks and games today. Fire Strike will only be available in the Windows editions of 3DMark initially.

Synthetic Benchmarks: UNIGINE Heaven 4.0 & Valley 1.0

UNIGINE Heaven 4.0
Heaven Benchmark with its current version 4.0 is a GPU-intensive benchmark that hammers graphics cards to the limits. This powerful tool can be effectively used to determine the stability of a GPU under extremely stressful conditions, as well as check the cooling system’s potential under maximum heat output. It provides completely unbiased results and generates true in-game rendering workloads across all platforms, such as Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.

UNIGINE Valley 1.0
Valley Benchmark is a new GPU stress-testing tool from the developers of the very popular and highly acclaimed Heaven Benchmark. The forest-covered valley surrounded by vast mountains amazes with its scale from a bird’s-eye view and is extremely detailed down to every leaf and flower petal. This non-synthetic benchmark powered by the state-of-the art UNIGINE Engine showcases a comprehensive set of cutting-edge graphics technologies with a dynamic environment and fully interactive modes available to the end user.

Game Benchmarks: AVP, Deus Ex:HR, TESV, DiRT SD, DOTA 2

Alien Vs. Predator
Spawned from the popular Alien and Predator franchises, Rebellion have collaborated to bring the legendary war to us through the medium of a first-person shooter. The game forces you to hunt, prey and most importantly survive in the swamp colony of Freya’s prospect as a Predator, Alien or Marine. The stunning visuals add to the sense of dread and terror that we have become so accustomed to seeing with the series.

The stand-alone Alien VS Predator benchmark tool was used for testing here. All the settings were set to very high and Tessellation was applied. The average FPS was recorded at the end.

Conclusion

Sitting at around £75, ASRock have created a very attractive A88X based motherboard that incorporates many well thought out features such as the LAN capable of remote power up and access, as well as the Purity Sound giving an impressive audio experience and support for high impedance headphones. However, it doesn’t stop there, gamers and enthusiasts will find sacks worth of potential for overclocking and performance tweaking, the ASRock A88X Extreme6+ is certified AMP 2400+ (supports AMD Memory Profile of 2400MHz+),and the stable power delivery to the APU via the 8+2 DIGI phases that helped contribute to its success with some current world records.

The downsides to this product are mostly oversights and do not affect the overall performance or value of this product, to list a few, this board suffers from a plasticky creaky noise while handling and installing, I am not sure if that is due to the manufacturing process used by ASRock and is of no concern, or if it is actually the sound of complex circuitry dying a death caused by inflexibility. Another note is, while the supporting software and utilities provided are fairly competent, it would be great to see the inclusion of the Home Cloud feature and Sun Login integrated into the A-Tuning utility as to simplify the use of such a fairly long winded, yet valuable process. Still on the subject of supporting software, it would be great to have a live update feature that works a little more reliably and doesn’t tell you that your software and BIOS are completely up to date when they aren’t.

Finally, aesthetics, though the A88X Extreme6+ is well laid out and has all the features and functions in the places many have come to expect, the overall aesthetic is fairly bland and uninteresting. This is not necessarily a downside, some may argue that once all components are plugged in, you will barely see the motherboard anyway, others may not really be interested in the aesthetics at all, which is also why this particular design may work in its favour. It has the ability to easily blend well with any build or design, fading into the background without any garish, bold colours.

Feature packed and ready to rock with the latest Kaveri APUs, ASRock go a little further with the A88X Extreme6+. This will come highly recommended and is deserving of our Gold award.

+ Home Cloud, remote wake and access
+ Purity Sound: ALC 1150 + 600ohm headphone amp

– None
