Today we’re taking a look at the ASUS ROG Delta Core, a cross-platform wired gaming headset, we ask if it lives up to the quality that we expect from the ROG brand.

ASUS, and in particular the Republic Of Gamers brand, are certainly no strangers to the peripheral market, and today we’re taking a look at their recently released Asus Rog Delta Core cross-platform gaming headset. Sporting a 3.5mm audio & microphone combination connection means that this headset can be used on PC/Mac, as well as PlayStation 4, Xbox One & the Nintendo Switch which is great for those of us who don’t just game on PC.

The drivers that ASUS have chosen for this headset are dubbed ASUS Essence Drivers, have been updated with Audio Signal Diversion technology, which helps separate out the low, middle and high end frequencies, which should help combat any muddiness and help contribute towards perfectly clear audio.

ASUS have also provided 2 sets of ear cushions, the only noticeable differences between the 2 is that the ROG Hybrid set have fabric mesh on the part that makes contact with your head, while the protein leather set foregoes the mesh for the aforementioned leather. The second difference is how deep the ear cushions are, The ROG Hybrid set are 2.5cm deep while the Protein Leather set are 1.9cm.

ASUS have decided to go for a closed back, airtight chamber design, which combined with the driver improvements should help with noise isolation and contribute to an overall high sound quality.

Packaging & First Look

Looking at the front of the box and it’s quite basic, we have the Republic Of Gamers logo in the top left, followed by a side on image of the headset, and the model name at the bottom of the box.

Turning our attention to the back of the box, and ASUS have packed a lot of information about the various features of the ROG Delta Core headset here

Opening the box up and we get our first look at the headset, ASUS have chosen to protect the headset with a thin layer of foam on the top of the box. We appreciate this as you can see the box was damaged in transit and the foam prevented this damage affecting the headset itself.

Removing the headset from the box and we get our first full look at the headset, and we have to say we like what we see so far.

Closer Look

In the box we’re provided with a warranty manual, a quick start guide as well as a detachable microphone and the second set of ear cushions.

The ear cups that are included are a full leather set and a set that have cotton on the parts that make contact with your head.

on the left ear cup are the volume & mute controls as well as the slot for the microphone.

Performance Testing

Design & Build Quality

When you’re paying £89.99 for a gaming headset you expect the build quality of the product you’re buying to be of high standards, in this area the ASUS ROG Delta Core does not disappoint. The ASUS ROG Delta Core weighs in at 346g which is a little on the heavier side of things, however the design choices of padded ear cushions & a padded headband that ASUS have employed here greatly aid comfort in both long gaming sessions & when we used these for general music consumption when we were out & about this headset was extremely comfortable. If you’re going to be using the headset while you’re out and about the microphone is detachable on this headset, and there is a satisfying click once the microphone is fully inserted.

Changing the ear cushions is a simple affair once you figure out what to do, it would have been nice for ASUS to dedicate a page in the user guide to changing these, it took us a few minutes to realise you can just pull the ear cushions off and replace with the option you prefer. Both sets of ear cushions are comfortable and cover our ears perfectly which really aided noise isolation and in turn really helped us to focus in on our games.

We also appreciate the choice of including volume & mute controls on the headset rather than in-line as if it was the latter of those choices it would make using the headset outside the house less appealing.

Audio Quality

We put the ASUS ROG Delta Core through its paces in gaming on PC & Xbox One as well as film & music consumption and the headset performed well in all areas.

ASUS have angled the drivers in the ear cups by 12 degrees to better match the natural angle of your ears, claiming that this provides better comfort and helps to improve sound quality by enabling the audio signal to travel directly into the ear canal. We certainly believe that the angled drivers aid in comfort as we have had issues with the drivers being flat before however, while the audio quality is great we would be wary of attributing it solely to this feature.

In the ROG Delta Core, ASUS have implemented what they’re calling Audio Signal Diversion technology which they state helps separate the highs, lows & mids and we were very happy with how balanced the sound is straight out of the box needing no equaliser adjustments to have decent sound quality.

Microphone Performance

We used the ROG Delta Core for chatting with our team mates in Apex Legends through Discord, as well as through Skype & Discord. We found that the audio was clear and if the microphone position needed to be adjusted it was easy enough to do as it is flexible and it holds its shape well.

Conclusion

Overall we’re really happy with the ASUS ROG Delta Core headset and are happy to give it our Performance award.

Coming in at £89.99 this headset is in the same price range as some other quality headsets and competition is fierce, however the sound quality on offer here would easily be in our top 3, and the build quality is above most other headsets we have tested.

We also appreciate that the earcups swivel and fold flat and over each other which means they’re easy to slip into a backpack so you’re not having to carry them around.

The bass is punchy and audible at all times, and the mids & highs are easily identifiable when listening to music which is a great feat with the headset coming from a gaming background rather than an audiophile one.

The only thing we would like to see different is the microphone mute function be a button rather than a slider, but this is definitely a minor gripe and doesn’t detract too much from the overall great impression the ASUS ROG Delta Core gives off.
