Gamers and audio enthusiasts will identify a key likeness to Sennheiser’s product line and that of EPOS – Sennheiser rebranded last year.

The GSP lineup has been a go-to series for many gamers over the years, under the Sennheiser brand. The design, build quality and audio features have always impressed and we’re hoping that with today’s headset, these traits continue.

The GSP 601 is one of the latest headsets within the GSP portfolio which builds on the success of previous GSP models. In the past we’ve considered the wireless editions of GSP but this time round, we’re looking at a wired variant which is cross-platform ready and is a unit which promises exceptional performance and super-clean aesthetics.

Today we’ll be testing out the GSP 601 along with the GSX 300 Snow Edition amp. Is the GSP 601 worth considering?

EPOS on their GSP 601

The GSP 601 is the latest color variant in our portfolio of high-end audio products dedicated to gaming. The GSP 600 Series is designed for the gamer that accepts no compromise in the quality and performance of their gaming accessories. GSP 601 comes in clean, crisp white, with both white and contrasted bronze colored cover plates included.

Closer Look

Since we’re also using the GSX 300 in this review we’ve included a shot of the packaging that this unit arrives in too. Both items are well presented, with packaging we expect from EPOS. Inside, there is padding for safe arrival during transit and respective manuals and cables to use both products.

GSP601 is a rather attractive looking headset which combines white, bronze and black elements. EPOS provides white covers which can replace the bronze covers on either side – some gamers will prefer to opt for an all-white headset and keep the theme uniform. Overall EPOS has done a great job with the aesthetics and we approve of their design choice purely on the visuals.

As well as having adjustment on the sides for different sized heads, the headband also benefits from large ventilation gaps and soft cloth padding to make long-term usage bearable.

Likewise, the earcups are again using some soft cloth material but also benefit from leather too. Underneath, EPOS are using memory foam which is commonly used nowadays to ensure comfort for long periods of time.

Having a volume dial is a must and GSP 601 comes with a large circular dial on the outside edge of the right earcup. This allows you to make those modifications on-the-fly and the feedback from this part is just ideal – it isn’t too loose, nor is it too stiff.

From this angle you can also see the metal hinge which is included on either side to enhance durability.

Over on the left-side there is a large microphone boom arm which utilises a lift-to-mute mechanism. This is useful if you need to quickly mute the microphone without having to search around within windows or in-game.

Software & Performance

The GSP 601 headset itself doesn’t come with dedicated software, but the GSX 300 that we’re using in this review taps into the EPOS Gaming Suite.

Within this software we’re able to configure the amplifier – update its firmware and properly modify presets/profiles according to usage. There are many tabs which are available for full customisation for the audio experience.

PERFORMANCE

To test out the performance of our GSP 601 we used the headset in a range of different scenarios including gaming, watching movies and listening to music.

As we expected from such a big player, the EPOS GSP 601 performs very well indeed. The bass has plenty of punch and treble is loaded with detail and good levels of in-sound separation. The treble is also well-balanced, without being too bright or dull.

Even though this headset is designed for gaming, we also feel its an excellent choice for movies too, especially when paired up with the GSX 300 and the movie preset is enabled.

In the gaming arena this headset possesses all of the attributes which gamers should be seeking – strong bass, high levels of clarity and detail and solid treble. We especially enjoyed using GSP 601 in FPS games and being able to have confidence with special awareness – picking up on nearby enemies.

Conclusion

Audio enthusiasts have put their confidence in Sennheiser for countless years and under the EPOS branding with the GSP 601, they once again, do not disappoint.

Looking purely at the visual appearance of this headset, we really like the design and styling choices. By default EPOS have given GSP 601 the bronze covers which compliment the white/black theme, but if that isn’t your thing, there are some white covers too to keep the overall theme cohesive. Sometimes a product can look great, but can also suffer from poor build quality but rest assured, the build quality is also superb – this headset even benefits from metal hinges to enhance durability.

For extended periods of time, headsets can become uncomfortable and cumbersome and while your ears still get warm and moist, we experienced no discomfort from using the GSP 601s for over 2 hours straight. The earcups are soft and comfortable and the overall weight strikes the right balance to avoid giving neck ache.

As mentioned on the previous page, this headset performs very well and this shifts up a notch when paired with the GSX 300. There is plenty of punch in the bass, treble is well-balanced and it’s an excellent headset activities outside of gaming too.

All of this quality does come at a cost and this particular headset should be regarded as a high-end offering. As such, the price-tag is GBP £199 | USD $219 | AUS $319 which is backed by a 2 year warranty. If you’re serious about gaming and want a headset which will stand the test of time, we believe it is worth every penny!

The GSP 601 is an excellent choice for gamers wanting a headset which is cross-platform ready and which boasts a great assortment of features, exceptional build quality and high-end performance.
