Let’s take a closer look at the FG3 itself. Weighing in at 315 grams, the headset is relatively lightweight compared with many gaming headsets I have used, which should help reduce fatigue during longer gaming sessions.
A standout feature of the FiiO FG3 is its adjustable ear cups. As shown in the photo above, the cups swivel to lay completely flat, ensuring a comfortable and personalized fit.
The FiiO FG3 ear cups feature a matte plastic construction with glossy accents. It is a straightforward, minimalist design that aligns perfectly with its budget-friendly price point.
Although the FiiO FG3 is categorized as a closed-back headset, it features small, hidden holes where the ear cups connect to the headband. This is a common design choice among major audio brands known as acoustic venting; these ports help relieve air pressure to prevent the driver from flexing and are often used to enhance the headset’s bass response.
With a pad depth of roughly 25mm, the FiiO FG3 ensures the hard interior of the ear cups won’t rub against your ears, preventing discomfort over time. The cushions are wrapped in a breathable woven mesh. This trades the tight seal of leatherette for superior heat dissipation, making the headset much more comfortable for extended use.
The FiiO FG3’s headband features a flexible steel and plastic construction that provides a secure, comfortable clamping force. As shown in the photo above, it offers a generous extension range to accommodate different head sizes. The underside is lined with plush cushioning wrapped in Alcantara fabric, giving it a premium and exceptionally soft feel.

The DAC and amplifier are built directly into the inline USB-C control module. It features an “M” (Mode) button that toggles between three presets: Gaming, Cinema, and Music. The Music mode offers a customizable equalizer, and all three profiles can be tweaked via the FiiO Control Web interface (which we will cover later in this review). Instead of a traditional dial, volume is adjusted using a tactile rocker switch. Finally, a dedicated mute button at the bottom features an LED indicator to let you know at a glance if your microphone is active.
While you can bypass the DAC/Amp module and plug the 3.5mm jack directly into your device, the headset’s built-in cable is quite short. It is clearly designed to be used in tandem with the module, which provides the necessary length for a desktop setup. Without it, the short cable limits you to handheld devices like smartphones or console controllers.

Audio Modes
Within the FiiO Control Web, you will find three main audio modes, each containing several specific profiles. Under Gaming Mode, for example, you have FPS, ACT, MOBA, and MUG profiles. Each of these features a unique, pre-set configuration that cannot be modified.
The Cinema Mode features a single profile, but it does an exceptional job of recreating the immersive acoustics of a cinema. It is a highly impressive feature.
The third mode is marketed as “Music Mode”, but it is notably labelled as “Common” within the FiiO Control Web. This section houses a standard HiFi profile alongside three slots for fully customisable user profiles. Additionally, the Equaliser tab allows you to browse and apply custom audio profiles shared by other users.
Equalizer
The Equalizer gives you full control to build and save your own audio profiles, which can then be easily accessed from the “Personal” tab. It is also highly flexible, allowing you to import profiles exported from another PC or load in custom configurations downloaded from the community.
Handpick
Under the “Handpick” tab, you can browse and download popular audio profiles uploaded by the FiiO community. At the time of writing, this section boasts over 300 pages of user-created presets. Many creators include detailed descriptions explaining their profile’s intended use—such as competitive gaming or music listening—and you will even find configurations optimised for specific hardware, like IEMs or particular headphones.
Beyond simply creating EQ profiles for the FG3, the FiiO Control Web acts as a broader hub. It gives users the ability to share and contribute their custom profiles, as well as seamlessly synchronise settings across any other supported FiiO devices they own.
Testing and Experience
TestingTo evaluate the overall audio quality of the FiiO FG3, I put the headset through a series of standard benchmarks—specifically a bass shaker test and a driver matching test (both easily accessible via YouTube and dedicated audio testing websites). The bass shaker test assesses structural integrity alongside driver performance, checking whether the housing or internal components rattle when handling deep low frequencies. Meanwhile, the driver matching test evaluates left and right channel consistency to ensure a balanced, accurate stereo image across the entire frequency spectrum.
Quality Check – Bass Shaker
Using a standard Bass Shaker test on YouTube, I evaluated the headset at both 50% and 80% volume. The results were excellent: I detected no driver distortion and absolutely no rattling from the chassis. I refrained from wearing the headset at maximum volume, as the FG3’s drivers are incredibly powerful and 80% is already uncomfortably loud. However, I did run the test at 100% volume with the headset taken off, and it still exhibited no noticeable rattling. Overall, the FG3 passes this quality check with flying colours.
Driver Matching Test
A driver matching test measures how closely the left and right drivers behave relative to one another. Ideally, both drivers should produce the exact same volume and frequency response when fed the same signal. For our evaluation, we used this driver matching test* found online.
For a gaming headset like the FiiO FG3, driver matching is crucial. Excellent left-to-right consistency ensures accurate spatial positioning and imaging. This is especially vital in competitive gaming genres where pinpointing directional audio—often enhanced by virtual 7.1 surround sound—can give you a distinct advantage.
The FiiO FG3 passed this test flawlessly. There was no audible deviation between the left and right channels across the frequency sweep. The audio remained perfectly centred throughout the test, confirming an equal and balanced output from both ear cups.

Recording
The FiiO FG3’s microphone does a superb job of capturing voice clarity. In fact, its recording performance easily rivals that of legacy premium headsets like the Sennheiser GSP 600. It also comes equipped with a simple yet effective foam windscreen that successfully filters out breath plosives and ambient background noise.
Experiences
When it comes to everyday listening and video playback, the FG3’s dual drivers push a surprising amount of volume. I rarely needed to set the volume above 10% on YouTube, as anything beyond that felt excessively loud. To put this in perspective, a Sennheiser GSP 600 requires 50–60% volume on standard audio ports, but dropping the GSP 600 onto the FG3’s DAC/Amp module cuts that down to 30–40%.
Compared to the HyperX Cloud III (which features 53mm drivers and matches the FiiO FG3’s price point), the FG3 is much powerful and offers superior long-term comfort vs the Cloud III’s leatherette earpads. While the Cloud III might look more at home in a gaming setup with its bold red accents, the FG3 wins on wearability.
Crucially, FiiO’s inline DAC/Amp module adds great value because it works so well with third-party headsets. Accessing the audio profiles via FiiO Control Web allows you to easily apply a bass boost or cinematic soundscape to whichever headset you plug into it.
PC Gaming
The FiiO FG3 is explicitly tailored for PC gaming, as accessing the browser-based FiiO Control Web is essential to unlock its full customisation potential. In practice, the headset performs remarkably well across various genres, from fast-paced FPS titles to immersive action RPGs—explosions in shooters and spells in Hogwarts Legacy deliver a satisfying, punchy bass response. Furthermore, the inline DAC/Amp module provides significantly higher volume headroom compared to headsets plugged directly into standard 3.5mm motherboard audio ports. If you prefer higher listening volumes with clean dynamic range, the FG3 has power to spare.
Smartphones and Tablets
While FiiO Control Web does not support mobile web browsers (tested on a Google Pixel 8a and Xiaomi Pad 8), the DAC/Amp module stores your profile settings directly onboard. This ensures that your hardware-selectable Gaming, Cinema, and Music profiles remain fully functional when connected to a smartphone or tablet for Spotify, YouTube, or mobile gaming.
The driving power on mobile devices is surprisingly robust. Watching YouTube or listening to music rarely requires going above 80% volume. Maxing the volume out to 100% makes the headset incredibly loud, yet the signal remains completely clean without a hint of clipping or distortion. This massive volume ceiling is a great asset for anyone who needs extra hearing amplification without compromising sound quality.
