As part of Ubisoft’s 30th Anniversary the 20013 classic will be available to everyone with a UPlay account, replacing The Crew as their free game for the month.
Ubisoft’s 30th Anniversary may have been running below your personal radar, but for the last few months their devotees have been enjoying the fruits of the publisher’s largess; namely, some great free games. On Wednesday the offer will rotate again, from driving title The Crew to Beyond Good & Evil, which everyone will be able to claim at no cost through their UPlay account.
Club Ubisoft’s Ubi30 offer from began in June with Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and followed up strongly with Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell and Rayman: Origins, all classics in their own right. September saw The Crew included in the promotion, the most recently released title thus far featured, and if you’re hankering for a driving sim it will continue to be available until it’s replaced on Wednesday.
A far cry from The Crew, Beyond Good & Evil was released in 2003 as part of the Playstation 2 era of console titles. Strictly classed as an action-adventure title, it drew praise due to its storytelling and visual style which were relatively uncommon for a Western title at the time. It was a risk for Ubisoft which didn’t pay off; despite a cult following and unique appeal the game didn’t make much headway in a market dominate by franchise releases.
The lack of commercial success hasn’t quelled growing demand for a sequel. A new installment of Beyond Good & Evil has been rumoured for years, but next-generation console hardware has come and gone without official word. Perhaps this is the first step in a much larger reveal to come?
