Today our focus is on MSI’s new mid-range offering in the gaming headset market, the Immerse GH50, Must buy or one to avoid? Read on to find out.

Product on Review: Immerse GH50 Gaming Headset
Manufacturer: MSI
Street Price: £79.99 GBP / $79.99 USD

Coming from a company who are more well known for their PC hardware than PC peripherals comes the Immerse GH50 Gaming Headset, a mid range gaming headset featuring 40mm Neodymium drivers as well as a removable unidirectional mic.

The Immerse GH50 also features virtual 7.1 surround sound and in-line controller to adjust volume, mute the microphone, a toggle switch to enable or disable the virtual 7.1 surround sound and a sliding toggle which enables or disables the vibration system control. The control unit also makes use of a high quality braided cable.

Along with the above features the GH50 also fold in on themselves, and included in the box is a carry pouch, meaning you can fold them away and easily stow them in a backpack if you’re on your way to a LAN event.

The feature list and the price tag makes the GH50 a decent proposition, read on to find out how they perform.

Packaging & First Look

The front of the box gives us a good look at the headset and not a lot more.

On the back of the box we get another shot of the headset, this time with the microphone plugged in and a few unique selling points of the headset.

In the box we get the headset itself, along with a carry pouch, an instruction manual and the detachable microphone.

Closer Look

Starting at the bottom of the headset and we can see that MSI have used an ample amount of foam on the ear cups, and we can see the slot for the microphone on the bottom of left ear cup.

Moving up the headset and MSI have continued the trend of ample foam on the headband.

On the outer side of both ear cups are RGB illumination zones.

The inline controller is a plastic affair and we get a closer look at the braided cable.

Performance Testing & Software

Design & Build Quality

The headset feels well built and even when folding the headphones they feel solid and well built. The microphone also slots into the headset with a satisfying and solid click, so we we’re in no doubt that we had made a good connection.

The amount of foam featured on the ear cups and headband is ample and the headset was comfortable for hours of use. As with most headsets the GH50 can be adjusted to better fit your head and the ear cups also have a certain degree of movement in them to ensure a good fit around your ears.

Audio Quality

In terms of audio quality we use the headset in a variety of situations, from Gaming to phone calls through Skype to general media consumption.

For a headset in this price range the GH50 performs well in the audio department, a little on heavy on the bass side of things but this is the norm for more mid range headsets and it can be tamed somewhat with the 10 band EQ in the Dragon Centre software.

Microphone Test

The Immerse GH50’s microphone holds up well whether it’s being used in Skype or Discord, a video demonstration of the microphone and dragon centre software is available below.

Conclusion

Overall the MSI GH50 is a solid choice in this price range.

It packs a solid feature set at a good price and is reasonably well built. However it does have some downfalls the 7.1 virtual surround sound just sounds…a bit off, and it’s not something we can quite put our finger on. However when this option is disabled the audio quality is great and well rounded.

The amount of foam that MSI have chosen to use on the ear cups and headband ensure that the headset stays comfortable in long gaming sessions.

The other big plus for the GH50 Gaming Headset is its very minimalist design featuring slick black plastic and the logo is not too intrusive as long as you RGB off, which as we will always point out, is a useless feature on a headset.

Another positive note for the GH50 is the fact that it is collapsible and easily stowed away in a backpack rather than being in a bulky carry case.

If you’re in the market for a headset in this price range, the Immerse GH50 certainly should be in your list for consideration

Pros
+Minimalist design
+Good stereo audio quality
+Well built
+Carry Pouch

Cons
-RGB lighting
-Poor 7.1 implementation
