Ubisoft’s upcoming multiplayer near-future shooter Tom Clancey’s The Division has flown under the radar since its initial reveal at E3 2013, due mainly to a slipped release date and relatively little social media buzz. Thankfully however this true next-gen title now has both a release date and a set of minimum and recommended PC specifications for players to cogitate on before they get their hands on the game.

Whilst a little spicy in terms of the CPU recommendations – Intel’s Core i5-2400 is a quad-core CPU from the Sandybridge era, the AMD FX-6100 is a 6-core design (naturally, AMD and Intel cores aren’t directly comparable) – it should only be a little tough on the small number of gamers running dual-core Intel or quad-core AMD designs. Meanwhile, as minimum specs go, AMD’s HD7770 or NVIDIA’s GTX 560 with at least 2GB VRAM will be relatively straightforward; potential users should be careful to ensure that they have the 2GB VRAM however, many models were shipped with less.
Increasingly NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 970 or AMD’ Radeon R9 290 are the go-to recommended graphics hardware for AAA games, and so it’s no surprise to see them here. Neither are what you would describe as the ‘cheap option’, but both are pretty much the best ‘bang for your buck’ GPUs for gaming. Just how much performance they will grant won’t be known until release.
In the past Ubisoft have been somewhat hit-and-miss in the quality of their PC ports. The Far Cry series is typically very solid after the first few weeks, whereas Assassins Creed is much more variable. The studio is claiming that they’ve put significant development focus on the PC version of the game, including developing a dedicated mouse/keyboard controlled customisable UI, PC to PC multiplayer, and integration with your Steam friends list; that bodes well for a great PC experience at or soon after release.
A Beta for the PC version of The Division opens on the 29th and runs until January 31st. Access to the beta is guaranteed by pre-ordering the game, but you can also try your luck by signing up to the Beta wait-list. The full game is scheduled for release on March 8th for PC, XBOX One and PS4.
