Sitting down in front of a PC is something which many of us engage in throughout the day; whether for work or leisure. We’re required to remain perched on a seat for up to eight hours of a day (and more in some cases). Prolonged periods of time spent sitting down is generally regarded as quite a bad practise because repetitive strain injury (RSI) can occur and so today we’ll be exploring a product which offers a practical solution in this regard – if you’re spending large amounts of time sitting, surely it’s important to sit somewhere comfortable right?
Vertagear are a start-up company which launched this year – their first line of products include a Racing Series of computer chair which seeks to enhance the user experience for the gamer. Today we’ll be taking a look at the SL-4000; a computer chair with stylish, quality and features which should go a long way to improving lifestyle in the office.

Packaging & Included Parts
SL4000 arrives in a gigantic, triple reinforced box. The overall weight for this package totalled 25KG – based on the weight and size the transportation is certainly a two-man affair.
Inside, all the parts are well-packaged with plastic sheeting and polystyrene blocks for extra protection while the parcel is with the courier. Initially there are marks on some of the cushioning of the chair but they do eventually adapt back to their original shape – this is perhaps Vertagear could look at in future.
Removing each of the parts from the packaging we first of all see the back rest section. We’re reviewing the “Carbon” version of SL4000 which is the most understated option to go with. For the surface texture there’s a blend of matt and smooth PCV leather with high-quality stitching.
The backrest adopts a concave design which follows a racing theme. In the upper section there are two cut-outs which use hard plastic. The Vertagear logo has been stitched on either side. Overall the look and feel of the craftsmanship is very good.
The actual seating part arrives with the armrests already attached. Again, the same materials as found on the backrest are used for this section too. Vertgear has made use of foam padding underneath these materials – this padding is soft, dense and adequate for long periods of usage.
Flipping the seat over onto the reverse side we can see that everything is extremely tidy. Fitted to the supporting arm brace there are some pre-attached screws which are used for the construction of the chair later. These screws are noticeably bigger and stronger than the usual types you find on an office chair.
Included Parts Continued
Along with all the parts, Vertagear include an additional box which contains the instructions manual, gaslift mechanism and five plastic wheels. The gaslift is weighty and sturdy and the wheels are also constructed of good-quality materials.
The lower section of SL4000 consists of a single piece of steel to form the feet for the chair. This piece of metal is well-made, substantial and has a matt finish as opposed to any gloss.
Each of the wheels clip directly into the ends without the need for any screws or tools.
Independent of the actual chair, there are two similar sized cushions included with the SL4000. Both cushions utilise the same materials and finish as those found on key parts of the chair – carbon pattern and matt PVC leather. Both also feature double stitching and elastic straps to attach to the chair.
One of the cushions is used as lumbar support for your back and the other is a headrest to supply extra support for the back of the head. Both items are of course optional and can be used as desired.
Finished Look
The entire process of building SL4000 can be completed in 15-30 minutes. The instructions manual is helpful in the building of this chair but largely uses pictorial explanations for the series of procedures and steps.
Most of the parts connect easily but there are a few areas which can be cumbersome. Attaching the seat to the backrest is tricky because the screw holes at the sides are obscured somewhat behind part of the cushioning – attempting to line up the parts, screws and balance the entire chair is tough, even with the help of an additional person.
Once everything is securely attached the overall look of SL4000 is impressive. The chair looks stylish, decent quality and comfortable. There are a selection of different colours available but our “Carbon” edition will likely coordinate with a wider selection of themes inside the office.
The arm rests on SL4000 can be moved forwards and backwards, closer or further away from your body and turned inwards or outwards to suit a specific style. Though they do appear to be hard plastic, the tops of the arm rests are soft and comfortable. One of our only gripes with SL4000 is the looseness of the armrest units themselves – they do wobble around considerably!
We’ve been testing SL4000 for a total of three weeks now and it’s surpassed our expectations for quality and comfort. Prolonged periods of usage are often the downfall for an office chair but Vertagear’s offering provides comfort for many hours due to the shape, size and materials which are utilised.
On the right-side of SL4000 there is a lever immediately next to the cushion which can adjust the angle of the backrest and beneath resides the gaslift mechanism – this device allows the chair to remain in a locked position or allow the backrest to swing. The height can also be adjusted to suit the user’s needs.
Conclusion
This is the first time we’ve reviewed an office chair at Vortez and yet whether you’re a gamer, enthusiast, system builder or general office worker, such an appliance is often one of the most overlooked pieces of furniture. Careful reflection and observation would indicate that the humble office chair should actually be one of the fundamental considerations to counter the pitfalls of RSI, poor posture and health related problems further down the line.
Vertagear’s SL4000 is a welcome addition to any office regardless of the intended use. While the varying colour options will fit in better with a specific theme the Carbon edition we’ve been looking at today is probably more versatile with its styling. The materials used throughout SL4000 are high-quality and after a period of over three weeks testing we can verify how comfortable this chair is for prolonged periods of time. In the last 18 months we’ve used a number of inexpensive and reasonably priced office chairs and comfort is probably one of the aspects which is paramount above everything else. With the other options we’ve used comfort and noise became obvious concerns but we’re really pleased to report that both these issues are catered for with Vertagear’s solution.
To accommodate different body shapes, sizes and personal preference, the arm rests and backrest both have multiple adjustment possibilities to truly customise the positioning at the desk. There are also optional back and head supports for additional comfort.
Priced at £214 GBP / $339 USD, SL4000 may be quite a hefty sum for casual users but for anyone serious about settling down in front of their PC for extended periods of time, this is a good buy and the long-term benefits will outweigh the outright purchase.
