Join In Win on their path to making the earth greener with the new GreenME series of PSUs. The environment might be at the top of the agenda but is it any good?

In Win recently launched a new line of power supplies named GreenME. As the name hints, this range of products has the environment at the forefront of priorities, so much so that In Win promise to donate $1 to the World Wildlife Fund for every PSU that is sold.

The GreenME Series has three products currently available: 550W, 650W and 750W. Each has been given a white coating to co-ordinate with the current craze of white computer chassis that seem so prevalent. Today we will be taking a look at the 650W variant to see how it fares.

Environmental Consciousness with Quality Design GreenMe ranges equipped with 80Plus Bronze ratings with up to 86.74% energy efficiency, the GreenMe range are packaged in a recycled cardboard box with natural soy ink print. They strictly comply with RoHS and ErP Lot 6 international regulations governing materials quality and ultra-low standby power.

In addition to the green core, the power supplies still commit to the latest ATX12V V2.31 and EPS 12V 2.92 specifications and internally use ultra-long life Japanese capacitors, up to four independent 12V rails and sleeve mesh covered cabling for neat cable management within the PC. The GreenMe range is backed by a 3-year warranty.

Packaging, Bundle & Cables


Having care for the environment at the top of the agenda the GreenME series is presented in lack-lustre, albeit eco-friendly packaging. Fundamental features and specifications can be found on the front and other sides of this box and inside the PSU is covered in a clear plastic sheet.

The accessories bundle contains only a few items and these include a brief instructions manual and two Velcro straps for keeping the cables tidy within the chassis.

The GreenME 650W in the spotlight today is not modular and as a result all of the available cables are hard-wired into the unit. These cables are sleeved to keep cables joined and also help uphold a tidy computer chassis. The cables that are included consist of the following:

• 24-pin ATX – 50cm total length
• 2x 4-pin EPS/CPU power – 50cm total length
• 2x SATA (3x connectors) – 50cm total length
• 1x Molex (3x connectors + floppy) – 50cm total length
• 2x PCI-E (6+2-pin) – 50cm total length

Closer Look (External)


GreenME is predominantly white; the surface of the outer casing has a grainy texture and overall quality is good. White is a colour that many are thriving for as many vendors continue to design white computer chassis.

In Win have opted for a 120mm cooling fan with GreenME, the exact brand and model we will discover when the unit is opened up in the next section. The In Win logo is found in the very centre and a circular grille covers this cooling fan.

GreenME is rather plain in its design, there is no branding or graphics on the sides apart from one side which has the specifications. This label lists the ampage and total power for each of the rails. Most notable is the +12v which is used primarily for graphics card power. In Win have opted for a quad rail design with 25A delivered on each. The 80 Plus Bronze efficiency emblem can be seen on this panel too.

Closer Look (Internal)

Removing the casing for GreenME 650W we get a glimpse of the inner-workings. There is a beige PCB and a dual heatsink design for cooling. Overall, a tidy design with good quality components used.

In Win have included a dual ball bearing 120mm cooling fan inside GreenME 650W. The brand is ADDA and the model is AD1212LB-A70GL. This fan is capable of 2500+ RPM.

There is a single Japanese hold-up capacitor which is branded as Panasonic with the ratings 390uF/420V 105°C.

Testing Methodologies & Results


Our testing methodology for testing Power Supply Units is limited to the multi-meter to show each rails performance due to us not having access to an ATE load tester. We are making plans to invest in equipment as we were directed by Cooler Master when Simon visited their test labs in June 2010.

Although this does constrain us slightly we can still monitor fluctuations on the rails and give the unit a good assessment when we feature it in one of our builds. The way the testing will run is simple, voltages will be observed at idle wattage and then a single GPU will be installed within the system and a combination of OCCT and MSI Kombustor will be executed to provide simulation with just 1 GPU. This will be run for 10 minutes. We won’t be adding in another GPU since the total wattage is specified as 650W and adding another card will exceed this. This PSU would be better suited to a single card configuration and CPU overclock with ample power for adding in plenty of other devices. The CPU will be overclocked during testing to maximise power consumption and strain. This should give us a good indication of how the GreenME 650W will perform under gaming stresses and beyond.

As I mentioned there is no ATE load tester available so generating as much power as possible is key to observing the fluctuations on the rails.

For voltage tolerance levels, ATX specify that a 5% variable fluctuation is acceptable. (Form Factors – ATX Specification PDF – Page 10). So what this means is:

3.3V Rail – 3.135V – 3.465V acceptable
5V Rail – 4.75V – 5.25V acceptable
12V Rail – 11.4V – 12.6V acceptable

Idle test – The system settles in windows without any applications or stressing. 1 GPU (165W)
Single GPU – OCCT/MSI Kombustor run for 10 minutes (382W)
Dual GPU – OCCT/MSI Kombustor run for 10 minutes (683W) (N/A for this review)

Conclusion


In Win may not be the most popular choice for power supplies but today’s review has revealed that they should not be underestimated.

We tested the PSU at 58% load, usually we would add in another graphics card to increase load for a comprehensive analysis but adding another caused the overall power to exceed 650W. At 58% load the unit maintained consistent performance and did not falter, it was also quiet at this operating level. Rated at 650W, this unit would be ideal for those wanting to use a single-graphics card configuration with headroom for overclocking and adding in numerous devices such as HDDs.



Build quality with GreenME is good , though the aesthetics are rather plain – the GreenME has no significant features to give it distinction or flare. Although the all of the cables are hard-wired into the unit they are adequately sleeved and the length of them is generous.

Priced at just £65 the GreenME 650W is a very good value for money option. Ideal for a mid-range system this unit will provide end users with reliability and performance at an affordable rate.

GreenME 650W is a great buy. At just under £1 per Watt there is no reason for budget conscious enthusiasts not to invest. As a result of our observations the GreenME 650W attains our amazing value award.
