TwinMOS are fairly synonymous in the Memory manufacturing sector since their arrival in 1998.
They primarily produce flash memory and system memory products but have also branched out into PC audio, multimedia playback and GPS.

They’ve sent us their Mobile Disk L2 32GB USB 2.0 pen drive for test.

The TwinMOS Mobile Disk L2 32GB arrived in a brightly coloured blister pack. The front lists the capacity of the flash drive, as well as other basic features.

Taking a closer look we see a ‘32GB’ imprint stamped on the base of the Mobile Disk stating the drive’s capacity.

The USB plug is securely screwed to the rest of the drive with a sturdy looking metal collar.

This plug can be swivelled and safely tucked away under the keyring side of the flash drive.

Test setup
CPU: AMD Phenom II 720 Black Edition @ 3.4GHz

Additional USB pen drives used for comparison:
– Kingston Data Traveller 8GB
– Play.com generic OEM pen drive 16GB
Testing
I used Sisoft Sandra to bench all three USB memory sticks using its testing suite. It should a give a good indication of the performance of each flash drive.
I also performed my own test which comprised of transferring a 580MB file to and from each USB pen. In order to make the transfer as smooth as possible I transferred the files between the flash drives and the secondary HDD in my test system.
Since this wasn’t the system drive it will hopefully transfer in a constant and uninterrupted manner.
I repeated each flash drive test three times during both read and write testing and took the average.
I also tested the drive on Windows XP Professional, Windows Vista and Windows 7 with no issues at all.
Lets see how it did against the competition…
Results
Initially I ran Sisoft Sandra’s benching suite.

The results show the TwinMOS way out ahead of the other two by quite some margin.
Next up I tried some real world performance by transferring a 580MB file from the PC HDD to each USB flash drive.
USB write speed.
Write speeds up first and I have a surprising result in that the cheap OEM flash drive transferred the data almost 10 seconds faster than that TwinMOS. Still a decent result for what is a ‘much’ larger drive.
Finally I tested the read speed of the drives by transferring the file back to the test systems HDD.

Here the TwinMOS performed in a way reflected by the Sisoft benchmark. Very impressive for a larger drive.
Conclusion
The TwinMOS Mobile Disk L2 32gb is a good looking, convenient and nice performing flash drive.
Depending on the release price it should be a really competitive model with plenty of capacity for the power user and good compatibility.
