ASUS ROG Strix motherboards have become increasingly popular amongst the enthusiast and gamers markets, mainly for their unique styling and dedication to the RGB scene. This time around, with the Z390-E Gaming, we get an even darker guise, shedding most of its flashier components.

Under the hood, the Z390 chipset offers support for the new Intel Core i9-9900K, as well as the current 8th Generation Core CPUs. We also get mutli-GPU compatibility with NVIDIA SLI and AMD CrossfireX, a pair of NVMe M.2 slots, with heatsinks, and SupremeFX audio.

The ASUS ROG Strix Z390-E Gaming conforms to the ATX form factor and appears to offer everything a budding enthusiast would require, which includes support for the 8th Gen Intel Core CPUs and the next-gen Intel CPUs.

The Z390-E has attractive packaging which is indicative of the ROG portfolio. A depiction of the motherboard can seen on the on the front, along with the supporting technologies, while on the reverse there is a schematic diagram with significant features listed.


Inside the box all of the accessories are sectioned off into compartment and we receive quite a number of included items. Here is a list of these parts:

Although we receive an SLI bridge with this motherboard, it is only compatible with GTX 10-Series graphics cards – such as the GTX 1070, 1080 and 1080 Ti, since it is a HB Bridge. Therefore, the new NVIDIA RTX 20-series graphic cards are not compatible.


We use to seeing some impressive designs from the ROG team and the Z390-E is no exception. This motherboard oozes style and finesse. So far, it’s our favourite choice – going on looks alone.

The PCB is black but features a semi-matt finish, all of the slots and ports are black and there is a mixture of black/gunmetal heatsinks. With such a neutral theme, it’ll be easy to pair up this motherboard with a whole host of other hardware without colours mismatching.

Z390-E conforms to the ATX form factor, measuring in at 30.5 cm x 24.4 cm.

Closer Look


Socket

With the switch to Intel’s Z390 chipset, we maintain the same LGA1151 socket, only with beefed up and improved power delivery circuitry. Two separate heatsinks, with a brushed steel appearance, are responsible for keeping temperatures in check; though if some serious overclocking is on the cards, the mount above the left heatsink is there to attach the included 4010 fan, with the aim of improving heat dissipation considerably.

Power delivery is provided by a single 8-pin CPU power connection. We tend to find an 8+4 or even 8+8 on higher end models such as this, but ASUS are obviously confident that a single 8-pin is sufficient.

4-pin PWM fan headers are plentiful in this region, with two to the South-West of the socket and two to the North-East



Memory

Dual-channel memory is the same on the latest Z390 chipset, when compared to the previous Z370. Four DIMM slots provide a maximum of 64GB with speeds up to 4266MHz (Overclocked). Optimem II is utilised here, with special shielding on the DRAM channels for improved performance and stability.

Here we also see the 24-pin ATX power connector as well as a USB 3.1 Gen. 2 front adaptor.



SATA

While NVMe M.2 storage becomes more popular, HDDs are still the go-to for large storage platforms. ASUS provide a bank of six SATA 3.0 ports, at a right-angle from the motherboard.



PCI

Checking out the PCI slots from above, we can see there are the following:

• 3x PCI-e 3.0 x16 slots (Modes: 16, 8, 4)
• 4x PCI-e 3.0 x1 slots

Along with AMD CrossfireX and NVIDIA SLI, NVIDIA® NVLink is also available – giving support for dual NVIDIA GeForce® RTX series graphics cards.



SSD

NVMe SSD drives are known for throttling because of their extreme performance and massive heat build up. ASUS ROG have made an attempt to delay, or even entirely prevent, the thermal throttling with the NVMe heatsinks. These heatsinks are on both slots and come with a pre-applied thermal interface material.

Both M.2 ports offer full PCI-E x4 speeds.



Audio

On the bottom-left of the motherboard we find the audio components, isolated from interference by a trace through the board, helping to ensure sounds are clear and heard as they should be. The ROG SupremeFX S1220A 8-channel processor is accompanied by several audio caps.



RearIO

The rear IO shield is pre-attached, saving for any sliced fingers and/or the embarrassment of forgetting to install it.

It’s good to see plenty of connectivity on a mid-level board, but it’s about time we saw the back of USB 2.0 ports and moved fully to 3.0 or above.

Benchmarks: Power Consumption


It’s interesting to note the power consumption across all motherboards. Although they are using the Z390 chipset, energy results can fluctuate between manufacturers due to the features and specifications that are integrated. First of all, for the idle tests the system is cold booted into Windows and no additional applications are executed – the watts are noted on the external energy monitor we use and then the system is loaded with 3DMark FireStrike – watts are again monitored for the duration of the test and the highest rated wattage result is then noted down. Below are the results of this energy test.


Benchmarks: Cinebench R15


CINEBENCH is a real-world cross platform test suite that evaluates your computer’s performance capabilities. CINEBENCH is based on MAXON’s award-winning animation software CINEMA 4D, which is used extensively by studios and production houses worldwide for 3D content creation. MAXON software has been used in blockbuster movies such as Iron Man 3, Oblivion, Life of Pi or Prometheus and many more.

Benchmarks: X264 HD


Simply put, this test measures how fast your machine can encode a short, DVD quality MPEG-2 video clip into a high-quality x264 video clip. What’s x264, you ask? It’s more or less the next-generation Xvid/DivX codec. I think it’s ideal for a benchmark because the application (x264.exe) reports fairly accurate compression results (in frames per second) for each pass of the video encoding process, and it uses multi-core processors very efficiently.


Benchmarks: SiSoftware SANDRA


SANDRA isn’t always a benchmark that is included in hardware reviews but we believe it shouldn’t be ignored. SANDRA provides a vigorous package that tests your system in a rather large array of benchmarks. There are many aspects of benchmark that can be executed. We will be considering – CPU and memory tests.

Benchmarks: POV-RAY


Persistence of Vision Raytracer’s PovRay is a free and open source 3D animator application with versions for computers with different operating systems.

This product allows users to build their custom 3D worlds with excellent quality despite their computer’s hardware. It has adjustable options for levels of radiance, refraction, and reflection. Calculation time may vary depending on the computer model, but PovRay can adapt to many computer builds, and is supported by the open source community.


Benchmarks: TrueCrypt


TrueCrypt is a discontinued source-available freeware utility used for on-the-fly encryption (OTFE). It can create a virtual encrypted disk within a file or encrypt a partition or (under Microsoft Windows except Windows 8 with GPT) the entire storage device (pre-boot authentication).


Benchmarks: AIDA64


AIDA64 Product Page
This simple integer benchmark focuses on the branch prediction capabilities and the misprediction penalties of the CPU. It finds the solutions for the classic “Queens problem” on a 10 by 10 sized chessboard. At the same clock speed theoretically the processor with the shorter pipeline and smaller misprediction penalties will attain higher benchmark scores. For example — with HyperThreading disabled — the Intel Northwood core processors get higher scores than the Intel Prescott core based ones due to the 20-step vs 31-step long pipeline. CPU Queen test uses integer MMX, SSE2 and SSSE3 optimizations.



Benchmarks: PCMark 8 & PCMark 10


PCMark 8 combines performance benchmarking with battery life measurement and includes tests based on popular Adobe and Microsoft applications. Whether you are looking for long battery life, or maximum power, PCMark 8 will help you find the devices that offer the perfect combination of efficiency and performance for your needs. It’s the complete PC performance benchmark for home and business.

Benchmarks: PCMark 8 Photoshop


The PCMark 8 Applications benchmark measures system performance using popular applications from the Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office. You can choose which tests to run based on the applications installed on your system. Each test automatically steps through a series of actions such as opening, editing and saving a file. The results are used to calculate the PCMark 8 Applications scores for the system.

Benchmarks: 3DMark FireStrike & TimeSpy

It’s important for us to perform a number of game benchmarks as well as the synthetic tests because gamers will want to know if there are any significant benefits. So here we have two recent gaming titles.

Conclusion


Comparing the new Z390 STRIX lineup to the previous generation of Z370 motherboards, not a lot has changed in terms of tangible features. The main difference being that we now have a USB 3.1 header, native wireless functionality and of course more RGB indulgence.

The STRIX Z390-E Gaming is without a doubt pleasing on the eye. Each generation the ROG team seem to always outshine the competition with their attention to detail and this Z390-E Gaming is no exception. Everything from the PCB to the heatsinks is masterfully designed to make your computer system stunning to behold.

But as we know – looks aren’t everything. But thankfully, Z390-E Gaming also impresses in other departments too. Across the board there is an assortment of features and of course all the hallmarks of a ROG solution such as MemOK II!. It isn’t unusual to find an SSD heatsink included on motherboards nowadays but it’s great to see two included with this offering.


Pitting this ROG motherboard against other familiar Z390 motherboards it’s great to see some outstanding performance figures coming to the table. We were especially impressed by the options inside the UEFI BIOS for overclocking – which are extensive. These tools and the 10-phase Digi+ design allow us to overclock the Core i9-9900K with ease. We managed to shift up the frequency beyond 5GHz and out of all the solutions being tested, this one allowed us to use less voltage – translating to less temperature output.

The cost of moving to Intel Z390 will hit the wallet harder than it did with Z370. Our Z390-E Gaming costs £229 GBP – $244 USD – $419 AUD, which begins to enter the territory of low-end HEDT motherboards. Combine this with flagship 9th Generation Core i9-9900K and the mainstream division is starting to cost a pretty penny.

The Z390-E Gaming is a strong offering from the ROG team. This board carries a solid feature-set and performance is superb.
